The staff spent the last two days in Mitchell attending the Elevate. Educate. Empower. – Moving Literacy Forward Across South Dakota Conference!
This outstanding professional development opportunity, hosted by the South Dakota Department of Education, focused on the latest Science of Reading research and evidence-based literacy practices designed to improve student success. Throughout the conference, our team gained valuable knowledge, practical strategies, and fresh ideas to bring back to our classrooms and support every student’s literacy journey.
We look forward to putting what we’ve learned into action and continuing to help our students grow as confident, successful readers!

The son of Laura Peterson, Isaac has spent his high school years staying involved in FFA and Choir, while also dedicating time outside of school to rodeo and bull riding.
His favorite class has been Ag. Isaac says he enjoys the class because it focuses on the things that genuinely interest him. Among his teachers, Mrs. Stevens stands out as his favorite because of the connection they’ve built over the years.
One of Isaac’s favorite high school memories was traveling to Indianapolis through FFA. The trip was meaningful not only because it was fun, but because it gave him the opportunity to meet and talk with people from across the country.
When it comes to school lunch, pizza crunchers top his list.
After graduation, Isaac plans to attend Mitchell Technical College to study Animal Science, with hopes of becoming a veterinary technician.
When asked how he would like to be remembered at IHS, Isaac simply said, “I don’t know yet — ask me again in a few years.”
His senior quote, from Lane Frost, sums up his outlook:
“It’s not the amount of time you have, it’s what you do with it!”

The daughter of Heidi Cottingham and Dustin Edelman, Jozlyn has been involved in volleyball, track, band, chorus, FCCLA, IPAT, and Student Council.
Although she has had many teachers throughout the years, her favorite will always be her first-grade teacher, Mrs. Bornitz. Jozlyn shares that Mrs. Bornitz has continued to support and help her even after she left her classroom.
Her favorite class has been Cooking Class, where she enjoys learning how to prepare new dishes and experimenting with different recipes.
When it comes to school lunch, Italian Dunkers top her list.
One of Jozlyn’s favorite memories comes from shop class during her freshman year. The class brought plenty of fun moments and experiences that still stand out today.
After graduation, Jozlyn plans to attend college online while working full-time and enjoying life.
She hopes to be remembered at IHS as someone people could always come talk to, knowing she is someone who would be there when they needed support.
Her senior quote sums up her outlook on moving forward:
“All the drama and hate don’t matter once your diploma hits your hand.”
